About IMO

The International Maritime Organization is a United Nations specialized agency responsible for improving the safety, security and environmental performance of international shipping. This position is based in its Conference Division.

Key Responsibilities

The Senior Editorial Assistant will:

  • Proofread complex and lengthy English documents for accuracy and consistency.
  • Edit, format and prepare reports, tables and other official documents.
  • Check grammar, spelling, punctuation, terminology and references.
  • Ensure translated and edited documents accurately reflect the original text.
  • Use document processing and computer-assisted translation tools.
  • Align bilingual texts to support translation memory development.
  • Convert documents between different formats and verify the final versions.
  • Support urgent document processing and meet tight deadlines.
  • Train and assist new and temporary staff on work procedures.
  • Deputize for the Supervisor or Deputy Supervisor when required.
  • Lead the team during assigned shifts and organize document distribution.
  • Be available to work night shifts when required.

Requirements

Applicants must have:

  • Secondary education or equivalent university entrance-level education.
  • At least six years of relevant professional experience as a proofreader.
  • Excellent English writing and speaking skills at mother-tongue standard.
  • Excellent knowledge of English grammar and spelling.
  • Excellent proofreading and document formatting skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Ability to organize and prioritize work under tight deadlines.
  • Ability to work independently and handle high document volumes.
  • Ability to work effectively in a multicultural environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to deputize for a senior staff member.
  • Good training and staff guidance skills.

Experience with computer-assisted translation tools such as eLUNA is an advantage. Experience within an international organization or UN system is also desirable.

Knowledge of another official UN language will be an added advantage.
