About the Role

The Food Technologist will support WFP’s Nutrition Value Chain portfolio in West and Central Africa. The assignment focuses on nutritious foods, large-scale and small-scale food fortification, and food processing initiatives.

The consultant will support the RICE UP project and the Systemic Innovation in Small Scale Fortification in Burkina Faso project.

Key Responsibilities

The consultant will:

  • Analyse national requirements and rice value chain dynamics in Burkina Faso.
  • Support rice miller cooperatives as shared platforms for food fortification.
  • Facilitate procurement and installation of blending equipment.
  • Support access to fortification premix and provide technical training.
  • Help cooperatives forecast premix requirements and manage supply chains.
  • Establish group-based quality assurance and spot-testing systems.
  • Support compliance with national fortification standards.
  • Promote markets for fortified rice through institutional and private-sector demand.
  • Support the transition of cooperatives toward operational and financial ownership.
  • Map rice and fortification premix trade routes across West Africa.
  • Identify strategic locations for blending operations within rice value chains.
  • Review policies and regulations affecting fortified rice trade.
  • Analyse institutional demand from school feeding, social assistance, humanitarian programmes, and grain reserves.
  • Support country offices with advocacy for regional food fortification policies.

Requirements

Applicants must have:

  • An advanced university degree in Food Technology, Food Engineering, Agribusiness, Health Sciences, Nutrition, or a related field.
  • At least 5 years of progressively responsible professional experience in a relevant field.
  • Previous or current experience working in the WFP West and Central Africa region is required.
  • Knowledge of relevant WFP regional procedures.
  • Strong knowledge of food fortification, food technology, and processed foods.
  • Understanding of West and Central African trade routes and policy advocacy.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • A client-focused approach and a high sense of responsibility.

Fluency in both English and French is required.
