The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) is recruiting a Work Programme Officer at P-4 level in Geneva, Switzerland. The role supports the GEO Work Programme through programme coordination, community engagement, monitoring and evaluation, governance support, and strategic events.

Job Summary

About WMO

The World Meteorological Organization hosts the GEO Secretariat. The Group on Earth Observations is an intergovernmental partnership focused on Earth observation data and evidence-based decision-making.

The Work Programme Officer will support implementation of the GEO Work Programme and strengthen engagement among GEO Members, organizations, associates, and partners.

Key Responsibilities

The successful candidate will:

• Coordinate operational activities across the GEO Work Programme.
• Serve as a focal point for programme leads and community contacts.
• Oversee the GEO Community Space and promote knowledge exchange.
• Design and deliver major GEO events, including the GEO Symposium.
• Review draft implementation plans against established criteria.
• Implement the Work Programme’s monitoring and evaluation framework.
• Collect and analyse programme monitoring data and results.
• Prepare progress reports, highlights reports, and strategic recommendations.
• Support Programme Board meetings, documentation, presentations, and follow-up actions.
• Provide briefings and analysis to support engagement with GEO Members.
• Supervise the Partnerships Officer and support staff development.
• Represent the GEO Secretariat at relevant international meetings and events.

Requirements

Applicants should have:

• A Master’s degree or equivalent in environmental sciences, international relations, public policy, social sciences, or a related field.
• Additional qualifications in Earth observations, geospatial information, or data science are an advantage.
• At least 7 years of progressively responsible experience in programme management, international partnerships, community engagement, or event delivery.
• Experience in monitoring and evaluation, governance support, and multi-stakeholder events is highly desirable.
• Staff supervision experience is an advantage.
• Working knowledge of the United Nations or a similar international organization.
• Familiarity with Earth observation concepts and the ability to explain technical issues to non-specialists.
• Strong report writing, communication, problem-solving, planning, and partnership skills.
• Ability to work effectively in a multicultural environment.

Excellent written and spoken English is required. Knowledge of other WMO official languages is an advantage.

Salary and Benefits

The position offers an annual net base salary of US$86,027. An annual post adjustment of US$72,521 is provided in addition to the base salary.

The appointment includes an initial one-year probationary period. Renewal may be possible based on funding availability and satisfactory performance.
